Our story
It started with a simple question.
Would people gather just to read?
No assigned book.
No discussion questions.
No speaker.
No workshop.
No networking agenda.
Just people, their own books, a quiet place, and enough time to actually read.
Reading After Work started as an experiment: could we create a space where reading felt social without turning it into another obligation?
A place where you could arrive alone, sit beside strangers, disappear into your book for a while — and somehow leave having met people.
Turns out, people wanted exactly that.
WHY
WE
STARTED
We missed doing nothing together.
Our days are full of notifications, meetings, scrolling, deadlines and plans.
Even our social lives can feel like another thing we have to perform.
Reading After Work was created as an alternative.
A few hours where nobody needs to be interesting. Nobody needs to introduce themselves to a room. Nobody needs to have read the same book or prepare something clever to say.
You just bring whatever you're reading.
We read together in quiet blocks, pause between them, talk when we feel like talking, then go back to our books.
And something interesting started happening.
People who came to read more started meeting people.
People who came to meet people started reading more.
Some arrived with friends.
Many came alone.
And many kept coming back.
That's when we realized:
We weren't building a book club.
We were building a reading community.

The experiment begins.
Reading After Work quietly launches with one question:

There was only one way to find out.
OCTOBER 2025
We make it a ritual.
What started as an experiment becomes a regular weekly gathering.
Bring your own book.
Read. Pause. Connect. Repeat.
The format starts becoming something people return to.
EARLY 2026
The community starts travelling across Cairo.
Reading After Work moves beyond one table and one neighborhood, partnering with spaces around the city and giving readers more places to find their quiet hour.
FEBRUARY 2026
Other people start noticing.
Reading After Work is featured by Egyptian Streets and CairoScene.
Our little reading experiment is becoming a story beyond the people in the room.
APRIL 2026
Our story travels further.
Reading After Work is featured internationally by Finnish magazine Maailman Kuvalehti.
By now, the community has gathered across multiple venues and neighborhoods in Cairo.
JUNE 2026
We take reading outside.
Our first Reading Picnic brings books, blankets and readers together outdoors.
Reading doesn't need four walls.
AUGUST 2026
One year of Reading After Work.
We celebrate our first anniversary with the people who turned an experiment into a community.
Not just a year of events.
A year of showing up, opening books, meeting strangers and coming back.

Reading After Work begins growing beyond its original weekly gathering through new ways of bringing stories and people together — from reading picnics to Pages to Screen and The Next Reader Shelf.
Still the same idea at the center:
